Talison Scholarship Recipient: Kaitlyn Castafaro

Kaitlyn is a talented student from Dardanup who received a scholarship from Talison to reside at St George's College while pursuing her studies at the University of Western Australia. The scholarship, designed to support regional students pursuing a Bachelor of Science or equivalent in a field relevant to mining, enabled Kaitlyn to cover half of her accommodation costs for the years 2020 and 2021.

Kaitlyn is currently in her fifth year of engineering at UWA and is working towards graduating with a Master’s in Electrical Engineering. Kaitlyn attributes the scholarship from Talison as a crucial factor in her ability to board close to campus whilst completing her studies.

As part of her studies Kaitlyn has interned at a mine in WA's North on a FIFO basis and whilst she gained valuable hands-on experience during this time, she is thoroughly enjoying being back at Talison during university holidays as part of a work placement. “Being able to drive each day from Dardanup means I gets to spend valuable time with my family and friends, and it is great to feel part of the close knit Talison community,” said Kaitlyn.

For younger rural teenagers considering university, Kaitlyn has some thoughtful advice: "Give everything a go…the good thing about university is that there are different units on just about everything, and you won't know whether something is right for you until you try, so if you get an opportunity, just go for it.”

“Trying different subjects and experiences has helped me work out what I do want to do, and has led me to where I am today,” said Kaitlyn.

Talison wishes Kaitlyn continued success in her studies and future endeavours. This scholarship is offered as part of Talison's commitment to supporting regional students and providing them with opportunities to achieve their goals.
